Novice Rowing

Novice training

Are you new to Cambridge and interested in picking up rowing? Or have you already done some rowing at other Clubs and are looking for a crew at senior, intermediate or beginners level? Welcome to City! We have a beginner/intermediate squad of more than 50 active male and female rowers.

City of Cambridge is one of the most active clubs on the river Cam - and has been one of the most successful clubs in 2007/2008. Recent successes include the capture of the John Jenner Trophy at the 2007 and 2008 Town Bumps with our women's first boat going head of the river and the men bumping up to 3rd. The club also won the Victor Ludorum trophy as the most successful club at the Peterborough Summer Regatta in August 2007, retaining it in the 2008 Spring regatta. It doesn't matter if you're just looking for a change of club, or if you're completely new to rowing - CITY offers a whole range of possibilities to get involved.

Beginner's 2-month rowing course:

Training on Ergs

We run regular beginner rowing courses. These courses run for two months and are aimed at those who have never been in boats before (or have rowed for less than 2 months). The sessions are held on Saturday mornings (11 - 12:30ish). If you like to participate in such a course you should email the Novice Squad Captain so that we can sort out crews and set up a training plan. We aim to teach basic technique to a standard whereby beginners can move into the relevant men's and women's intermediate squads or into regular crews. The session is coached by members of the men's and women's squad. Other sessions open to beginner rowers include:

  • Monday 7pm - Circuits
  • Wednesday 7pm - Mens Squad Weight training
  • Thursday 7pm - Womens Squad Weights
  • Sunday evening Ergometer-training

Whether your ultimate aim is to compete or just to row for fun, City is a great place to learn and socialise.

We look forward to seeing you on the river bank!
