CCRC has an active junior squad for rowers aged between 12 and 18, with around 40 members. The club aims to introduce rowing to young people and to help them to enjoy and progress in the sport. We have two sides to the junior squad: a racing squad and a recreational squad. Juniors are matched to one of these groups depending on their own ambitions and level of commitment. Some juniors will compete in local and regional regattas and races against other junior rowers from other clubs. Where juniors progress in their training and rowing ability, there is the option, too, to aim to race at national level races.

Junior Taster Day

CCRC's junior section runs taster days for juniors during the school holidays about 3 or 4 times per year. These days give the potential rower a chance to have a go at all aspects of rowing (indoor rowing, circuit training as well as getting out on to the water) to see whether it is a sport they may enjoy. The days are good fun and open to all.

If you would like to be kept informed of the date of our next taster day, please send a request by email to  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Junior Rowing Taster Days

City of Cambridge's Junior Squad regularly run taster days for 11-18 year olds (Years 7-13) interested in trying out rowing.

The taster day allows participants to try the key aspects of rowing training, including a session in a boat on the river, training on the indoor rowing machines and a core stability and fitness session. The day, which is coached by the squad's coaches and older junior rowers, culminates in a mini-rowing competition.

The next taster day will be on Friday 2 June 2017 10am–4pm, for ages approx 12–16. The cost is £25, payable on the day.

Juniors at Star Head

The WJ14 coxed quad of Isobel, Ottilie, Ellen, Beth and Bella followed up their success at Ely the previous weekend by beating eight crews to win at Star Head. Despite equipment malfunctions on the way to the start and a big crab during the race, the girls stayed calm to finish 34 seconds ahead of their nearest competitors. The other win came in the WIM3 singles, where Anna Smart came top of a City 1-2-3. The day also saw second places in six further categories, and well executed races throughout.

Seven Wins at Ely Small Boats Head

The club picked up seven wins at Ely Small Boats Head, with wins in singles, doubles and quads.

Sarah Airey picked up a win in WIM3 singles over the 5km course as she prepares for Scullers Head on 16 November. She was followed closely by the WJ16 2x of Bex Middleton and Katie Hill, who won their category by over a minute. The junior squad rounded off the 5k races with good performances in new crew combinations, with wins for Izzie, Pernille, Jemima and Anna in WJ17 quads and Jack, Sam, Will and Jack in the J18 quad category.

Racing over a shortened 3km ‘mini-head’, Amy Bland picked up a win in WJ17 singles, with the WJ15 coxed quad of Becca, Katherine, Alice, Ava and Vicky and the WJ14 crew of Isobel, Ottilie, Ellen, Beth and Bella winning their respective categories.

City Juniors Autumn Regatta Report

By 8am on Sunday 8 September, 22 junior squad rowers had raced (up to three times) and won their categories at Cambridge Autumn Regatta. After meeting at the boat house by 6.25am, the junior boys and girls woke up just enough to win the CRA women’s novice and men’s novice eight categories in their first return to sweep rowing since their successful bumps campaigns. The WJ14 coxed quad matched the older juniors, picking up a win in the CRA women’s category.

The eights then split into second categories, with many making it through heats throughout the day, including a final for the WJ15 4x+ in Katherine’s first ever race. The club picked up a further three wins: Pernille in WJ16 1x, Camille in WJ15 1x and Karim and Harvey in J16 2x.
