CCRC has an active junior squad for rowers aged between 12 and 18, with around 40 members. The club aims to introduce rowing to young people and to help them to enjoy and progress in the sport. We have two sides to the junior squad: a racing squad and a recreational squad. Juniors are matched to one of these groups depending on their own ambitions and level of commitment. Some juniors will compete in local and regional regattas and races against other junior rowers from other clubs. Where juniors progress in their training and rowing ability, there is the option, too, to aim to race at national level races.

Junior Taster Day

CCRC's junior section runs taster days for juniors during the school holidays about 3 or 4 times per year. These days give the potential rower a chance to have a go at all aspects of rowing (indoor rowing, circuit training as well as getting out on to the water) to see whether it is a sport they may enjoy. The days are good fun and open to all.

If you would like to be kept informed of the date of our next taster day, please send a request by email to  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Six wins at Champs Junior Head

The junior squad raced en masse at the Champs Junior Sculling Head, with 30 juniors from age 12 to 18 competing in singles, doubles and quads.  With six wins, the fastest times of the day for both the girls and the boys, and a(nother) steering prize for Emma, the race was a great round-off to a busy winter season.

The J16 boys, J16 girls and J15 girls headed to Dorney Lake (the Olympic venue) for the Scullery National Junior Sculling Head, one of the main junior races of the calendar.  With less than ideal conditions (very cold, very wet), the juniors raced against other schools and clubs from across the country over either 3.6km (J15) or 5.4km (J16).

English Indoor Rowing Championships – Juniors Race Report

19 PBs, 8 hours on a coach, 6 medals, 3 first aiders, 1 human pyramid and half an hour of karaoke: this could only be a City junior day out. The popularity of the idea of a trip to the English Indoor Rowing Championships increased somewhat with two key details: the event took place in a velodrome and we would travel there by coach. Indeed, the juniors were not even deterred by two not insignificant problems: you have to do an erg test when you get there and you have to leave at 6am. And so, demonstrating their stupidity and the unwavering patience of their parents, a contingent of 19 juniors, aged 12 to 18, took to the ergs.

Junior squad at Norwich Head

CCRC Juniors at Norwich Head

Charlotte's report

For the first time this year, we let the juniors off Cam. Those who have seen or heard of our on-Cam escapades will know that the City junior squad has an alarming tendency to act as a magnet for 'exciting' incidents and will realise that taking eleven juniors in eight crews to unchartered waters is a largely terrifying prospect. True to form, the day proved suitably action-packed to allow us to add to the growing number of "can you remember when..." stories.

Junior racing in May

CCRC Juniors - Racing in May

Charlotte's report

May was the first foray into a regatta season for most of the City juniors. The month started with a slightly chaotic and very exciting introduction to side-by-side racing with City Sprints, 400m outside the boat houses. Twenty juniors raced in thirteen different crews, picking up wins in ten of the thirteen categories. Congratulations to the following crews for their wins:
