Learn to Cox

City offers a free learn to cox course. Coxes are the making of a good crew. They steer the boat and give instructions to the rowers, forming an integral part of the team.

What is coxing?

The cox (coxswain) is the person sitting (usually) at the back front of the boat steering and issuing instructions.

Why should I try coxing?

The cox is as integral to a boat’s success as its rowers. Knowing when to get your crew to push for the win, spotting the attention to detail that makes the boat move that little bit faster, steering the perfect corner…. Coxing is a challenge. There are just as many skills to learn as rowing and it’s incredibly rewarding (happy crews, one of the team, did we mention winning..?)

What makes a good cox?

As a cox you are the leader of the boat. You motivate the crew, you give instructions and some of the time you might end up being a coach (from within the boat). Decisiveness and a big personality are helpful attributes, if you’re not there yet you’ll get one on one coaching to improve and develop as a cox. Coxing is a great way to develop your leadership skills, gain confidence and work as part of a winning team.

What do I get out of it?

You’ll be part of a smaller (your crew) and larger (the club) rowing family. If you want to keep fit you can join your crew with their land training. You’ll get to meet new people, learn new skills and have the opportunity to travel across the UK competing at national regattas.
