GB 🇬🇧 v France 🇫🇷 Match

Last weekend, Lily & Lena travelled to Gravelines, France, to represent Great Britain in the W2x event at the annual U16 fixture against France. They had a fantastic experience at their first international regatta, executing a solid race against a strong French crew. Congratulations to the Great Britain team for securing the overall win!

City enjoyed one of its finest regattas to date during what remains the highlight of the rowing calendar. With four boats competing in the largest-ever edition of the regatta, the standard throughout the week was exceptional. Our crews demonstrated that City can compete with the biggest names in the sport, winning multiple rounds at the world’s premier rowing event.

Let’s also take a moment for the six crews who competed at the heatwave-adjusted qualifying races both on Friday evening and Saturday morning, with some agonisingly close near misses for our Wargrave ‘B’ (W8+), Britannia (M4+), Wyfold (M4-), Diamond Jubilee ‘B’ (JW4x) and Fawley ‘B’ (JM4x) crews.

For the juniors, qualifying both a boys’ and girls’ quad marked a historic first for the Club, with the girls’ opening-round victory providing a memorable highlight.

The senior squads also made history: only three UK clubs reached the last eight in both the men’s and women’s eights—Leander, Thames and City. It was a fitting reward for the commitment and hard work of both crews. The women’s eight were beaten by a formidable Thames crew that went on to reach the final, while the men’s eight faced the eventual Thames Cup winners, Thames ‘A’. Both crews proved they belonged at the highest level—and laid down a marker for an even stronger return to Henley Royal Regatta in 2027.

After outstanding results and a lot of hard work this season, as evidenced by their quality tan lines, our Thames crew showed serious speed at Met and Marlow and earned a pre-qualified spot into Henley Royal Regatta. 🥇 GB Trials - J16 🥇

Four of our Performance Juniors travelled to The NWSC in Nottingham to race in brutal headwind conditions for a spot on the annual GB v France fixture. As ever the field was stacked with outstanding junior talent, and our top J16 girls double of Lena and Lily won the category!! They are therefore selected to represent GB next weekend. The match is going to be held in Gravleines, France next weekend. A huge achievement for the girls 👏

These boys have been fuelling a deep cultural movement built entirely on vibes and on shouting WAAHEEY at any City crew within a one-mile radius 🤌🏻 If you see them on the water, you know the drill, give them a proper, roaring WAAHEEY to send them down the course.

Another proud moment at @marlow_rowing regatta where both M1 and the Junior boy quad ‘A’ came away with category wins, and ensuring pre-qualification for HRR for the men’s eight. Results summary:

Fawley ‘A’ (JM4x) - 7th C final (won JM4x Tier 2) 🏆

Thames (M8+) - 2nd C final (won M8 Tier 2) 🏆

Fawley ‘B’ (JM4x) - 4th H final (8th 2nd JM4x)

Wyfold (M4-) - 1st E final (10th Tier 2 M4-)

J Palfreyman 1x - 6th in B final

So chuffed to see the Club so well represented across the Performance, Core, and Junior squads at @henleywomensregatta. W1 and the first Junior quad had statement performances, being incredibly competitive in their races, which got them each respectively a pre-qualification for HRR! Results summary:

Wargrave ‘A’ racing in CH8+
Made it out of TT and raced Thames (their top Wargrave crew) in round 1, losing by 3.5 seconds

Wargrave ‘B’ racing in Asp 8+
Made it out of TT and raced Molesey in first round, losing by 11 seconds

W Core 2x racing in Asp 2x
21st out of 43 in TT, narrowly missing out (less than 5 seconds) on the side by side racing

Diamond Jubilee ‘A’ racing in JW4x
Made it out of TT and raced Maidenhead in first round, losing by 4.7 seconds

Diamond Jubilee ‘B’ racing in JW4x
22nd out of 46 in TT, missing out on side by side by 9 seconds

Looking back on Brit Masters, this post is here to celebrate the Masters squad, who sent several boats to Brit Masters up at the NWSC in Nottingham. The event continues to grow in popularity which is excellent to see, and it now a real showcase of the depth of Masters rowing in the UK. Fantastic to see 4 wins for the club (either as City or composite entires) across the weekend!

In the sweltering bank holiday heat the Junior Performance squad produced the strongest set of results ever at the regatta, battling it out with some of the best junior programs from across UK & Ireland!

Off-Cam club achievements this side of May

Regatta season is well underway and the senior performance, core, juniors, and masters squads got some serious side-by-side racing experience and fantastic results at Dorney lake and Holme Pierrepont National Watersports Centre. Wallingford Regatta
The senior performance squads took on the first major national regatta of the season and produced some exceptional results. The top men & women’s boats doubled up in both 8s and 4s with the men showing some encouraging performances across the boat types. The women had a statement day going toe to toe with the leading national club programmes, topped off with an exceptional & commanding win in the club 4- event. Club results:

The final major national race of the summer season before National Schools saw 4 junior performance crews race at the JSR. An incredibly mature row from our JW16 4x saw them come away with the win, overturning the result from JIRR last weekend in an emphatic way! Club results:

Junior Interregional Regatta

With 4 City crews selected to represent the Eastern Region (the most of any club/school in the region) the Performance Juniors had an outstanding day up at the NWSC in Nottingham. Results:

A hugely impressive set of results against the best juniors!

‘Dutch Wizard’ was christened today as our new men’s VIII+, in the honour and presence of the actual Dutch Wizard @vfsdubois who gave so much of his time and expertise to the club. His magic touch, good spirits, and dry humour have helped the Performance squads go fast and use their glutes — so it was a no brainer when the opportunity came to pool together to name this boat. Though you may no longer live in the country Vince, you are, how you say, always with us 💙💛♥️

Looking back on: Cambridge Junior Sculling Championship

A very recent addition to the races organised by the club, the sculling event went brilliantly! The sun came out, the marshalls and bank parties herded their crews, the kids had a good time, bish bash bosh.

Well done to all who participated, and special congratulations to Will (City @cityrcjuniors) for fastest open 1x, Bea (Peterborough @peterborough_city_rowing_club) for fastest girls 1x, and Rob Roy @robroyrowing for being the Victor Ludorom winners!

Bumps Reports 2026 - Tuesday

A huge day of gains for the ladies saw our fortunes turn around on the second day of racing, including an epic and precisely managed overbump-no-fines-please place swap between W3 and W4 in the middle of div 1. The open crews also put in a strong show with a great revenge bump for the Masters Men and M2 and M3 both scalping Nines to creep up to meet M1. City is 1-3-5 right now...could we be 1-2-3 on Friday? 🫣 Both headships retained for now 🏆 well done and good luck M1/W1 f
