Bumps Reports 2026 - Tuesday

A huge day of gains for the ladies saw our fortunes turn around on the second day of racing, including an epic and precisely managed overbump-no-fines-please place swap between W3 and W4 in the middle of div 1. The open crews also put in a strong show with a great revenge bump for the Masters Men and M2 and M3 both scalping Nines to creep up to meet M1. City is 1-3-5 right now...could we be 1-2-3 on Friday? 🫣

Both headships retained for now 🏆 well done and good luck M1/W1 for the rest of the week.

W1 (W1)

Despite their cox being completely stumped by the umpires question of 'What should you do when you get bumped?', W1 made a strong start to their bumps campaign with a couple of Strava QOMs, paddling the reach and finishing on rate 16. They return for day 2 looking to improve on their execution

W2 (W2)

The vibes vessel, with neon pink socks and high spirits, pounced off the start with the excitement of day one and many tangfastics bouncing through us. At around 150m in, the whistle was blown for a length so we pressed on. Hearing three or four more consecutive whistles we thought we had the bump within our grasp. However, we kept a close margin and settled into pace towards the finish. We are ready to catapult into some more racing tomorrow!

W4 (Junior Performance Girls)

After only one outing, and after a season of entirely sculling for 7/8 members of the crew, expectations were hardly very high for Tuesdays race. Despite this, Piotrs comment of ‘it’s not that bad’ on the warm up filled us with some confidence, as well as the realisation that we did actually have 3 GB rowers in our boat. The race started as Piotr said ‘very bad’, which I thought was harsh considering we all held onto our blades and (mostly) put them in the water so I don’t know what more he wanted.

After the most nerve wracking part of the race was over, and by that I mean going past the slow motion camera, we hit another obstacle in the form of the two crews in front of us bumping out. At that point I think we would all admit we basically thought it was over, alas with some incredibly motivating, if slightly derogatory, calls from our cox we moved to a length off crew 6 at the top of the reach. I have little memory of what followed until the bump other than thinking ‘wow this is like really hard’. When we OVERbumped Piotr was probably happier than when we prequalified for Henley, I mean he literally jumped for joy. W2 need to watch out tonight…

W6 (Core Women B)

Moving on up: The sandwich is no more, succumbed to the glitter. Glitter is no longer on us—it is us. It has infiltrated every bag, every boat, every item of clothing, and several dimensions not yet recognised by modern physics. In what can only be described as an administrative error by the universe, Holly completed the entire race without taking a refreshing sip of cam water.See you tomorrow division 1.

Back to the Row-ture: Day 2

The three-way time loop on Monday, which returned us to the top of Division 3 as sandwich boat instead of safely depositing us in Division 2, confirmed the timeline remained unstable. After securing a last-minute traveller from an alternative timeline to fill 6 seat, and John completing the crew’s traditional induction with a grate selection of cheese jokes (proving that a good cheddar is not bound by time or space), the DeRowrean was ready to resume its mission to restore causality.

Following a Masters Women’s record-breaking launch velocity on our practice start outside the Plough, confidence was high and the mission parameters simple: row cleanly away from Express III and avoid creating any further paradoxes. The cannon initiated the temporal launch sequence, quantum oar alignment was confirmed, and the DeRowrean launched into the future with a row so strong we briefly overtook our own puddles. Express III were last detected somewhere around 1985. Timeline restored. The sandwiches remain a temporal anomaly.

W11(Masters Women B)

We’ll just let this message do the talking…. received from a member of the Rads crew that we bumped…. 😉“Anyway, what’s the deal with your Masters Women B – they came at us like a freight train tonight – felt like they had a motor on the boat and got us before first post corner! And we didn’t think we had a bad start!”Like a ‘freight train baby’!! 🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂 😆

W13 (Dev Women)

Herein continues the saga of W13, rising from yesterday’s adversity — a boat that would not steer, a crab, a crash upon the corner — into a crew that still fought to within half a boat length of Xpress. So to day two the women came, sharper and hungrier, with Mike and David’s coaching paying off in spades. A start picture perfect, and before the footbridge, W13 were already up and gaining, the bump within reach — until the Peregrines swooped from nowhere to catch them.

But this crew is one to watch. Day two proved it: precision over panic, composure over chaos, every lesson from Mike and David landing exactly where it should. And when all eight blades clunk together as one, that’s a crew coming into its own — for girls that clunk together get drunk together. W13 rise sharper, stronger, and hungry for Thursday.

O1 (M1)

In typical City fashion, day 1 on headship was the first outing with the full crew. Went hard off the start. Stretched out onto rhythm. Took the rate down. Simple. Job done.

O2 (M2)

M2 have rowed over 8 times in a row in the notoriously static top end of O1. Facing the old rivals there was no intent for this to continue. With the M2 boys having spent most of the summer season in fours there was not a direct speed comparison before the race, fortunately with a bump in the gut we have since deduced that we must be at least a bit quicker. Onwards to more challenges tomorrow starting from the heady heights of station 3

O3 (Performance Junior Boys)

Night 1! The City Junior Boys came out in full swing, fuelled purely by George the vibe vessel, obsessive pounding of the saxboard at the sight of every city crew, and that heavenly feeling when you’ve sat the boat at the easy call for a good 20 seconds. Life was good, and with the all-empowering lock-in call from Maks the Skipper, we were ready. The boys flew off the start, however after tasting whitewater from 99s M2, the choppers stunned at least 14 fish. Nevertheless we managed to hold overlap down the gut, and pull of the scrappy bump after a pileup at grassy. One done, and the blades are only getting pinker. Bring it on!

O5 (Junior Boys Returners)

We were being chased by a fairly fast Hills returners crew, so we set out to bump Radegund as soon as possible. By the bridge, we could hear the whistles from the boat ahead. Not wanting to let them bump out, we stepped on a few gears and quickly finished it before first post. Tomorrow we chase the Hills returners who managed to overbump above us.

O12 (Core Men B)

What is there to say, bout the cruelty of fate? Nine minds awoke, the evening spent in thought, pondering Xpress 5, and the battle to be fought. But alas the sheet showed, a change we did not foresee. For our opponents this day were our own Masters A. Cast from their seat in grand Position 5, they instead found themselves in our firing line. No mercy was asked, no quarter was given, we pushed off the gun, as our speed did quicken. They may be our brothers, but such is the game, we hoped to catch them and glory our name. Yet alas we could not, as the river drifted away, twas the masters who triumphed upon this day. Vengeance they cried, as they struck down Xpress, leaving us with no foe, only to rest. A day of patience, and a day of rest. On Thursday we swear, we will get that bump.

O16 (Coxes)

So as it turns out, if you row in the same line up multiple times the rowing actually gets better 😱 who knew!! Unfortunately the result today didn’t reflect this newfound revelation and the 1:45 split off the start wasn’t enough to keep at bay the Isle of Ely crew we were dwarfed by. The coxes continue their streak of not rowing further than first post 💪 let’s gooooooo
