Bumps reports 2026 - Wednesday

Another fantastic day of performances for City on this middle day with only 2 bumps down across the entire club, and ever increasing density at the top of div 1.

Headships retained, places gained, but baby, it ain't over 'til it's over...Only Friday places matter...can we keep up this awesome pace? 😬

O1 (M1)

Day 2 at headship saw a weedy start, KOM round grassy as well as past the plough, and some washing down of tabs for our M2 comrades 🫡

O2 (M2)

The attritional component of our bumps campaign got underway with the chase of Tabs M1. After a clean start we expertly navigated the corners before the hunt really got underway down the reach. 2 lengths at Ditton was closed down to 2 whistles at the railway bridge but it didn’t happen tonight. However, there are two more days to get involved…

O3 (Performance Junior Boys)

Night 2! So far up we can barely hear that cannon anymore. These really are towering heights. Tonight the boys pulled off a bump so clean it cleared the gut of weeds, with George navving a line so sharp it could have shaved Danny’s head again. 99s M1 had no idea what hit them, and the choppers put the 3rd city crew in its new comfy spot in the top 4. We’re clean, sharp, and hungry for more!

O4 (Senior Men Returners)

O4 - The Have-beens

After being forced to row the whole course yesterday (St Neots bumped Xpress as we started to move in on them), O4’s have-beens were especially motivated to wrap things up nice and quickly.

Xpress O1 were today’s unfortunate victims. Our first whistle came straight off of our start sequence, swiftly followed by a second and a third.

As we approached the slowmo camera on first post corner, our crew’s well-weathered engines began to fail. Little did we know, we had in fact already mounted Xpress’ stern. Their belated concession resulted in sighs of relief from our crew, who were just relieved to not have to row the whole course again.

Next up is the second round of chasing St Neots O1. They got away from us on day 1 by bumping Xpress, but it doesn’t appear that they have a way of escaping their date with the have-beens this time…

O5 (Junior Boys Returners)

This time, we were chasing the Hills returners. Some of us were old classmates and used to row with them in the past, so we knew that they would put up a good fight. We were prepared for a longer race and set off with a much cleaner start than the previous day. The first straight felt long and painful, holding at one whistle, but as we come into the gut, all of the cheers from the other crews spurred us on. We take a razor sharp line around grassy and close to two whistles. We make a push around ditton, but a few dodgy strokes mean that we miss them around the corner. One last push for ten after ditton and we close in and take the kill at the spinning zone.

O6 (Core Scullers)

The crew decided before boating that we would not row more than 500m. Sadly we rowed 100m more on the second row to claim our spot in division 1. But made up for it by only rowing 250m to bump into sandwich. Great row, great crew. Onto tomorrow.

O7 (Core Men A)

2 bumps on the trot - not the Bumps campaign we were expecting. Stiff competition who bumped us in the same place as Day 1 after about 500m. Tonight will be a different story - a different boat, a new sub and a renewed sense of urgency to get it done. We're going all out tonight.

O10 (City of Clare)

A strong start for the City of Clare quickly dispatched any worries about the crew chasing us, and we settled into a solid rhythm along first post reach. Fi expertly guided us around the corners and we finally got our first whistle. With a huge shift coming onto the reach we were hungry for more and advanced towards the crew ahead stroke by stroke. Our first whistle became two which became three and then we finally had overlap and Fi could see the fear in their eyes. Alas, our finish being the White House denied us the space to close the final few inches.

We go again tomorrow 🔥

O15 (CRE)

After Mon and Tue lessons in survival, we confidently set off determined to last a little longer. Mission accomplished… technically.

This time we made it significantly further down the river, albeit before first post still, before our cox glanced behind and realised that the Isle of Ely crew - featuring what appeared to be eight exceptionally large blokes - had materialised out of nowhere at what can only be described as warp speed. Once again, thank you to the organisers for placing our very novice crew closer to the front amongst experienced novices… sigh…

By the time the warning reached the crew, Ely had already booked the appointment, signed the paperwork, and delivered another emphatic bump.

The good news? We stayed ahead for longer. The bad news? Apparently lightning can travel by boat.

O16 (Coxes)

We came into today trying desperately to hype ourselves up for a row over. We started off at a 1:35 split but we were still getting caught by Champs behind. With a mega bit of steering from our cox David (high praise from a boat of coxes) we weaved through the bumped boats in front. Champs weren’t so lucky, catching CRE’s stern swiftly followed by them being bumped by the crew behind them. That left us with no one in front and no one behind so we had a lovely paddle to the finish line all overjoyed that we did not have to push the whole way down the course. YEAH THE COXES!!!!!

W1 (W1)

Buoyed with confidence from day 1, we had another comfortable row over, chasing the Strava segments for a few more QOMs. The most exciting part of our day was having front row seats to the vibes vessel’s dominating chase of Cantabs down the reach. Can’t wait to watch them finish the job tonight!

W2 (W2)

If you should know one thing about the Vibes Vessel™️ it is that she likes a show- and what a performance occurred yesterday!!

Tabs W1 learnt from their mistake on Tuesday and pegged it out of the start, the heavy duty machinery of the Vibes Vessel™️ patiently shunting along to keep a comfortable boat length and half behind (and keep the crowds in suspense) until the reach. Unfortunately for Tabs, the third quarter is where the Great Vessel™️ thrives, so with a glorious rhythm out of the corner and a shout of “the Vibes Vessel™️ cannot be killed” from our wonderful Mika, the pink-footed eight made her move, securing the long awaited whistle by halfway down, a second at the railway bridge, and the final three with 50m to go at the finish. But of course, the Vibes Vessel™️ loves the drama, so she tactfully decided to keep the fans in suspense for next time, letting the Cantabridgian ladies have it for today. A thrilling ride to the end, and we are raring for more.

The Vessel™️ must be fed. Onwards to tomorrow. Bring your voice boxes- I hear we perform best with an audience.

W4 (Junior Performance Girls)

As usual we were prepped for Wednesdays race by some motivational words from Piotr, amongst the dialogue the most memorable phrases were “why do you row well in the warm up and then always row so awfully when you race, every time!” and “if I tell you girls that it is great you will become convinced that it is great and you won’t improve”.

Don’t worry Piotr we’ve seen the slow motion video and we are certainly NOT convinced we’re great. Alas we trundled up to the start line to be greeted by two historically accurate and highly committed to the role gun firers, a personal highlight for me. Our cox claimed that the bang isn’t as bad if you open your mouth and stick your tongue out but I think that’s just a ploy to get us to look silly, and we can’t be doing any more of that. with our tongues firmly away we were ready to start the race, well we were after the message of ‘shut up and listen’ had eventually made its way down to Gabby at bow.

The race started as chaotically as any bumps race, but with the added bonus of getting a whistle within only 15 strokes, a huge relief since we were not looking for a long race like Tuesday. Our prayers were answered as we only had to row 500m before swiftly getting to tuck into the bank, unfortunately right on the inside bend of first post corner. Despite the racing being over the stress was not as we witnessed several crews scrape by incredibly closely. From there we engaged in the age old ritual of pretending to be a tree and paddled home.

Back to the row-ture: Day 3

The Flux capacitor was fully charged and the crew of the DeRowrean were ready to rewrite history. Again. Tonight’s mission was simple: restore the timeline by returning to Division 2 and exacting revenge on Tab X who blocked the river on Monday night. The plan: travel 32 strokes into the future where Tabs X had already been bumped. The DeRowrean launched with a velocity so strong we punched clean through the space time continuum. The laws of physics finally decided to co-operate, and we materialised on Tabs before they knew we’d arrived.

Our coach James reminded us ‘If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.’ He was right.

Mission Update: Following the successful restoration of the timeline the DeRowrean has been upgraded with the experimental Mr Fusion unit and is now entirely powered by the previously missing sandwiches and leftover Candy Kittens. Plutonium no longer required.
