Right at the start of 2025 a masters rower from another town club collapsed outside City, in what was later discovered to be a heart attack. Luckily Amy, Jenny, Emma, and Tim were all on hand to help and he has since made a full recovery.
HOWEVER, this incident revealed that the nearby defibrillator was not accessible and so we decided to get our own that people can be properly trained on and is maintained in an accessible location.
With help from RALPHH (Robert Allen, Life Promotion & Healthy Hearts Trust) we now have it! The charity is named after Robert Allen, who was a National Schools’ Rowing Champion and a respected rowing coach, who passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack aged just 35. In addition to purchasing and installing defibrillators they also provide heart health advice for active and retiring athletes and heart screening for athletes about to engage in elite level sports. The newly-acquired defibrillator will find a permanent home inside the boathouse, but due to its portable nature it is also possible to take it away to competitions having it handy where needed - eg at the finish line for Winter Head to Head rather than 10 minutes jog away at the boathouse.
On hand to receive the gift from RALPHH were Jon Geater, Masters Co-ordinator; Club Treasurer Claire Berryman; Mark Sutton, representing RALPHH; and the Club Captain, Tom Upton. Despite the very serious nature of the visit it was a lovely occasion and we had some fun trying to find the best location for a photo, so we all got a go at receiving the gift!
